"When we booked this trip it included the beautiful bars and extravagant lobby- we chose The Jane for this specific reason. The history was alluring and the photos of the rest of the hotel were exactly what we were after. My partner and I even settled for sleeping in bunk beds if it meant we could experience The Jane as it was presented online. We booked about 6 weeks ahead of time and when we arrived, we entered into a lifeless basement and were shown to our room. That’s it, no lobby, no bar… just metal spring bunk beds and a room the size of a broom closet. We poked our head into a door by the elevator and we were immediately rejected by a man in a suit (as the fun part is a private night club now). The entire experience was deflating and We were SORELY disappointed.\nHowever- the hallway and rooms were still neat and historic and the staff were friendly and I was provided with a 20% refund- which I was satisfied with. I wish we were notified ahead of our trip as we would have cancelled."

"The Jane Hotel, with its beautifully designed wooden cabins, the old lobby and reception area, and the iconic carpeting, used to be one of my favorite places to stay in New York, located in the West Village. This used to be The Bowery’s little budget sister—a charming, affordable alternative with character and soul. The concept of an affordable hotel that still offered great service and charming design—clearly developed by people with taste and vision—now feels like a thing of the past.\n\nA few years ago, after The Jane was sold, it underwent renovation and major changes that compromised everything that once made it special. It’s essentially become a hostel, with a strangely designed reception area tucked away in the basement (which I believe used to be a staff entrance). The original lobby, café, and ballroom have been turned into a bizarrely styled private club for yuppies.\n\nSadly, nothing was done to preserve the original interior. Apart from some superficial cosmetic updates, the bathrooms are still partly functional—some not at all—and those that do work have the charm of a Days Inn. The lighting is overly bright and unflattering, and the place doesn’t smell good. The new (and only) elevator is painfully slow, and I couldn’t even find a staircase. Even the lovely quilted cotton blankets were replaced with itchy polyester ones. There aren’t even water bottles in the rooms anymore.\n\nWhat a sad story."

"The place was amazing…15 years ago. Service is shitty ( depends who's behind counter. The young guy was especially rude.) The mattress are run-down. And the place is under construction ( autumn 2024…but didn't seem finish according to comments).\nSpend your money somewhere else even though the location was great."
